Latinoamericano SURrealism
2023 | Galería Sur | Uruguay
This exhibition brings together key works by central artists of the Latin American surrealist movement.
“In Latin America, we coexist daily with surrealist elements, with absurdities that coexist and touch each other in an unusual way. The magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez’s literature portrays this real and dreamlike world.
We can affirm that surrealism has remained alive in Latin America beyond its European origins as an independent, autonomous movement of exceptional quality. There are many artists who have participated, consciously or unconsciously, in this current. Something to highlight is that women artists have played a fundamental role in the development of this movement in the continent.”
Featured artists: Juan Batlle Planas, Antonio Berni, Frida Kahlo, Roberto Matta, Wifredo Lam, Grete Stern, Xul Solar, Amalia Polleri, Cícero Dias, Ismael Nery, Leonora Carrington, Sergio Lima, Walter Lewy, Mario Arroyo and Tola Invernizzi.
